Extended Road Works Renew Hope for Apac-Apoi Connectivity

The ongoing rehabilitation of the 12.79-kilometer road stretch from Atopi-Anyapo-Ayeng, being implemented under the National Oil Seed Project (NOSP) at a cost of over UGX 1.2 billion, continues to register a significant impact on communities in Apac and Apoi sub-counties, despite the extension of the contract timeline.

According to Eng. Aguma Tom Edward, Senior Engineer-Apac, during the site meeting held on 17th December 2025 at Ayeng, it was noted that the project completion date was officially extended from 4th December 2025 to 4th February 2026. The extension was agreed upon to allow the contractor adequate time to complete outstanding works to the required technical standards, especially sections affected by weather-related delays.

The road is a critical link for farmers, traders, and service providers across the two sub-counties. As rehabilitation progresses, residents have already reported reduced travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and improved access to markets, particularly for oilseed crops such as sunflower and simsim, which are central to the National Oilseed Project’s objectives.

Farmers noted that produce that previously took hours to transport due to poor road conditions can now reach collection points and trading centers faster, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing household incomes.

Beyond trade, the road has enhanced access to health facilities, schools, and administrative centers. Motorcyclists and public transport operators have confirmed that areas once considered hard to reach are now accessible throughout most of the year, even during the rainy season.

Community leaders emphasized that the improvement in the road network is already contributing to better school attendance, faster emergency referrals, and stronger interaction between Apac and Apoi sub-counties.

During the Ayeng site meeting, district leaders, engineers, and community representatives welcomed the contract extension, noting that the quality and durability of the works were more important than rushed completion. The contractor assured stakeholders that the remaining works would be finalized within the new timeline, with close supervision from district engineers and project officials.

Once completed, the Atopi-Anyapo-Ayeng road is expected to play a transformative role in local economic development, agricultural commercialization, and regional integration within Apac District. The Don Mo Contractors Ltd team reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the road delivers long-term value to the people it serves.

As February 2026 approaches, communities along the corridor remain optimistic that the extended timeline will result in a fully rehabilitated, all-weather road capable of sustaining development for years to come.
