Distribution of Micro-Scale Irrigation Equipment worth Over 300 Million Shillings to Farmers in Apac District

Apac, 23 May, 2025 – The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and Apac District Local Government, successfully distributed micro-scale irrigation equipment worth 366,797,000 million shillings to farmers in the district. This significant initiative aims to empower local farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and strengthen food security within the district.
The distribution, which took place on May 18, 2025, was attended by key District officials and local farmers who directly benefit from this intervention. The equipment, which includes drip irrigation systems, sprinklers, and other essential tools, is designed to address the challenges posed by inconsistent rainfall patterns and water scarcity, ensuring that farmers can sustain their crops and enhance yields throughout the year.
A total of 18 smallholder farmers from various lower local governments across the District received the equipment. This includes 5 from Apac Municipalities, 7 from Ibuje, 1 from Chegere, 2 from Apoi, and 3 from Akokoro Sub Counties. The main project objective is to promote sustainable agriculture, reduce reliance on rain-fed farming, and improve food security. The project is part of the government’s broader efforts under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer (UGIFT) program.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Willy Amute, Agric Extension Officer and the focal point person micro-scale irrigation scheme, emphasized the importance of modern irrigation techniques in combating climate change and increasing agricultural resilience. The project requires a farmer to contribute 25% of the total equipment cost and the government to make up the 75% remaining balance.
"The micro-scale irrigation systems being distributed today are a game-changer for farmers in Apac District. These tools will not only improve productivity but also help farmers diversify their crops, reduce dependency on rainfall, and ultimately increase their incomes," Amute said.
The project is part of the larger government’s strategic interventions on agro-industrialization, tourism, mineral development, and science, technology, and innovations (ATMS) which includes agricultural financing. The goal is to boost agricultural production, support rural livelihoods, and contribute to the national objective of enhancing food security across the country.
Farmers in Apac District have long faced challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns, leading to crop failure and financial instability. With this new irrigation technology, farmers are now equipped to better manage their water usage, increase crop yields, and reduce the impact of droughts or floods.
During the handover ceremony, Hon. Sam Opira, Secretary of Health & Education, speaking for the District Chairperson, emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming subsistence farming into commercial agriculture.
"This intervention will empower our farmers to produce beyond seasonal limitations, increase incomes, and contribute to the district’s economic growth," Opira said.
Local leaders, including Ms. Janet Odongo Akech, Principal Assistant Secretary, praised the initiative, noting its potential to alleviate poverty and reduce post-harvest losses.
Farmers expressed optimism, with one beneficiary, [Farmer’s Name], saying, "With this irrigation equipment, we can now farm all year and secure better markets for our produce."
“I am very grateful for the support we have received today. This irrigation system will change the way we farm,” said Jovino Akaki, a beneficiary. “We no longer have to rely solely on rainfall. Now, we can water our crops even in the dry season, which will help us grow more and earn better.”
The distribution process also includes hands-on training for farmers to ensure they fully understand how to operate and maintain the equipment. This approach aims to foster sustainability and maximize the long-term benefits of the project.
The government and MAAIF remain committed to supporting farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices that will enhance food security and improve livelihoods in rural communities.
